Today we went with college in the mini van to the scrapstore in Bristol. We gathered all of the scrap we need for the school visit, however, communications with the primary school have stopped as people are very busy so i may have to rethink about this part of my project.
We have thought instead about doing our projects but building the outcomes our selves thinking about what the children would have built and then show them to lecturers as if we went along with the original plan. Instead of going to a primary school and using children I am going to use students from my group and carry on with my idea using them.
On the visit to the scrap store I got al of the scrap i need to continue with my new idea .

Building more bridges

Today i have done more research about building bridges and structures, i spent the morning trying to find out which were the best ways to connect different parts of the bridges together. I tried using string and weaving card board together which was effective but when working with younger children this would probably take too long and they may find this difficult.
However, i found that tape was a lot more effective as its easy for the children to use and would take less time, it is also great for securing the bottoms of the structures. I have attached a picture of a bridge i made which i thought i may try but with using masking tape instead of string when i go to work with the children at the school.

Final idea
last week i started to plan my final idea, i am still going with my original idea of teaching through play using steiner school ideas, however, i am now instead of just building bridges going to get the children to build structures to either hold one of them or to hold a weighted object. I have allready collected a few items from the scrap store and now just need to go back and get a bit more then devise a short lesson plan then i will be ready to go to the school and work on my project.

My idea

Last week I came up with the idea i wanted to use when i work with the children and the scrapstore. am going to research Steiner schools and take into account the ways that they teach and use the scrap to teach the children through play. I came p with the idea that i would help the children build bridges out of scrap and place weights on top of them to show how different structures with different strengths can take different weights.
i have included a copy of my original planning ideas and a mind map of ideas for this project.

Individual planning of projects
When i started to plan my part of the project my initial idea was to make a short film documenting how the children at a local school made use of the scrapstore materials. I chose this because i thought it would show bigger companies that the didn't need to landfill their waste and that there was a better more Eco-friendly use for it.
I started to plan this idea further during the summer however, as there were already going to be two films in our group i decided to take another approach to it. My latest idea was to document the trip to the school using photographs and to set the children a task to do to advertise that the scrapstore needs more scrap. I will also be taking pictures of other projects on the day and collaborate everything from that day into one big poster and add an eye catching slogan or phrase.

Second meeting with scrapstore
The second time we met with John Pendlington from the scrapstore we had a better idea of what the scrap store wanted and were more fixed on our ideas. We discussed how the scrap store wanted to promote the use of scrap to try to get bigger companies to donate their waste and our ideas to help this happen. We came up with individual ideas which involved a visit to a local school. One idea was a large scale flat floor sculpture, another was a chain reaction film, the third was a stop motion film and the last was a poster.
This meeting helped us a lot in what our final ideas were going to be and how we were going to develop them further during the summer holiday.
