My idea

Last week I came up with the idea i wanted to use when i work with the children and the scrapstore. am going to research Steiner schools and take into account the ways that they teach and use the scrap to teach the children through play. I came p with the idea that i would help the children build bridges out of scrap and place weights on top of them to show how different structures with different strengths can take different weights.

i have included a copy of my original planning ideas and a mind map of ideas for this project.

Individual planning of projects

When i started to plan my part of the project my initial idea was to make a short film documenting how the children at a local school made use of the scrapstore materials. I chose this because i thought it would show bigger companies that the didn't need to landfill their waste and that there was a better more Eco-friendly use for it.

I started to plan this idea further during the summer however, as there were already going to be two films in our group i decided to take another approach to it. My latest idea was to document the trip to the school using photographs and to set the children a task to do to advertise that the scrapstore needs more scrap. I will also be taking pictures of other projects on the day and collaborate everything from that day into one big poster and add an eye catching slogan or phrase.

Second meeting with scrapstore

The second time we met with John Pendlington from the scrapstore we had a better idea of what the scrap store wanted and were more fixed on our ideas. We discussed how the scrap store wanted to promote the use of scrap to try to get bigger companies to donate their waste and our ideas to help this happen. We came up with individual ideas which involved a visit to a local school. One idea was a large scale flat floor sculpture, another was a chain reaction film, the third was a stop motion film and the last was a poster.

This meeting helped us a lot in what our final ideas were going to be and how we were going to develop them further during the summer holiday.

Choosing our partners

I have chosen to Partner with Bristol Children's Scrap-store as i think their company makes the most out of recyclable materials by reusing them before they have to be recycled and i love the creativity of their work and how they allow children to be as creative as they like.

Interaction project brief

Introduction: Creative people often work with local authorities and communities. This unit will give you the opportunity to do that, developing creative work in a social context, linked to the theme of sustainability through recycling. The main requirement is that you interact with other people- and not just your friends- to produce your work and the extent and quality of that interaction is the key to success for this unit. It is divided into two parts: part 1 by end of may and part 2 beginning of September - end of October.

BANES meeting

This is what we learned from the meeting with BANES when they came to the college...

- BANES are friends of the earth

- 43% of what’s thrown away is recycled

- Short wood is now used which results in less carbon emission

- We are being encourage to recycle more by increasing costs of landfill sites

- supermarkets have now introduced reusable bags

- you can now recycle more types of plastic

- food waste is a massive problem and they are now introducing food waste bins

oxfam meeting

We visited an Oxfam shop and they explained what they were looking for with anyone who wanted to partner with them and what their aims were...

Oxfam is a charity that makes use of clothes donations and sells them at high end prices to make a profit for the charity. They also take damaged clothes and want to create a scheme to render damaged clothes and sell them at a lower price to make use of all donations and reuse instead of recycle. Oxfam also sells a wide range of other charitable objects such as books, vinyl's, tapes and many miscellaneous objects that people donate.

COBC meeting

Lynn Scragg visited us at college from the City Of Bath College council and briefed us on the recycling policies of the college.

- The college currently has no real recycling policy they don't have recycling bins for any materials.

- We suggested they bring in recycling bins for plastic bottles, waste paper and food.

-We also suggested using posters to encourage students to not just recycle but to also re-use for example the re-use of plastic bottles.

Scrapstore meeting

Today we visited Bristol Children's Scrap-store in Montpelier, Bristol. When we arrived we met with John Pendlington who spoke with us about what the scrapstore was looking for with their partners and what type of work we would be doing if we partnered with them. He also explained what the scrapstore is about and what they hope to achieve.

After the meeting we had a look around the scrapstore and took photos and recorded interviews of customers opinions of the scrapstore and what they go there for.

We took notes throughout the visit and recorded all of the talks and meetings.
After visiting the scrapstore we visited a small organic food store next door to it called Better Foods and interviewed staff and customers about what they do and how they're more environmentally friendly and why the shopped there.

I think the meetings with the scrapstore ans Better foods were some of the more interesting meetings and i think i would like to partner with Bristol children's scrapstore.

Researching Recycling

In the second session with charlie we were told to just research and get together some basic information about recycling. We were then sent to the library to research recycling and find books with any information on it and copy those pages so that we all had different information and could then put it all together into one file of information; which would then help us with our research during the interaction project.

Introduction to interaction with charlie

Today we got introduced to the project Interaction. charlie told us that we would all meet with four different clients who were from; B&nes, Oxfam, COCB council and Bristol children's scrapstore. During meeting each client they will explain what their briefs are and what we will be working on if we choose to work with them. After meeting with each client we will need to choose one to work with throughout the interaction project.
